At just over 1 million square feet, the new terminal is the largest, single infrastructure project in Kansas City’s history. It will have a profound and lasting economic impact on the region in the form of new jobs, opportunities for local and small businesses and a world-class traveler experience for airport users. Expected to open in early 2023, the new terminal will replace Kansas City International’s aging B and C terminals, which were built in 1972.

This project is being delivered via a public-private partnership. The project has been awarded LEED Gold certification, making Kansas City International Airport’s New Terminal the largest airport in the U.S. to achieve this status.

At just over 265,000 sq ft, the new terminal includes ticketing, an updated and more efficient outbound/inbound baggage handling system and screening, security, offices, concessions, support areas, and a connection to the existing concourse. When complete, the new terminal building will offer a skyway bridge to the parking garage, a connection to the existing concourse, a new energy plant, and a new office building. Five aircraft gates will be built in addition to the existing gates.

A new train wash was constructed that will allow the facility to wash the fleet of cars twice a week without adding additional crews for this operation. A water conservation system was installed which will allow the train wash to utilize 70% recycled water.

Additional cars were added to the existing fleet requiring 5,800 lineal feet of added guideway and running surface to be installed throughout the yard.

To construct the 1.8-million-square-foot facility, the existing car rental buildings were demolished to make way for the five-level, cast-in-place concrete structure that now provides vehicular parking areas, rental agency areas, office spaces, car wash equipment and commercial fueling stations. In total, the CONRAC includes 2,250 parking stalls.

The 22-acre project was sequentially phased in Steps A, B and C. Step A was completed and ready for occupancy in December 2019. The entire project, which is LEED Gold certified, was completed in December 2021.

Wastewater Treatment Components:

• Pretreatment building expansion: Expanded infrastructure for new equipment and processes.
• Pretreatment equipment installation: Installed specialized equipment to remove contaminants from wastewater.
• Pen waste gravity clarifier: Designed for solid waste separation via gravitational settling.
• Pre-anoxic basin: Supported initial biological treatment stages in an oxygen-deprived environment.
• Aeration basin expansion: Increased capacity for aerobic treatment processes.
• Additional lagoon: Expanded storage capacity for more efficient treatment.
• Tertiary system addition: Implemented for stringent water quality standards.
• Final clarifier addition: Separated solids from treated water for clarity and purity.
• Sludge holding optimization: Enhanced management of generated sludge for efficiency.
• MCC expansion: Expanded motor control center infrastructure for increased demands.
• Dewatering expansion with dedicated building: Provided facilities for sludge dewatering and staff operations.

These enhancements collectively ensured that the wastewater treatment system could effectively remove animal byproducts from the water, meeting regulatory standards and safeguarding environmental quality.

This project included the design and construction of a new two story stand-alone Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL) building on the College of Veterinary Medicine campus at Iowa State University.

Iowa State’s VDL is a national leader in protecting animal and human health with laboratories in the space processing upwards of 120,000 cases each year and conducting more than 1.5 million tests annually. This lab is fully accredited by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians. The VDL provides diagnostic services for animals including necropsy, bacteriology, serology, histopathology, virology, parasitology, molecular diagnostics, and toxicology as well as offering analytical services.

The building includes specialized laboratory spaces with specific functions or processes. The remaining lab spaces are flexible and separated allowing the labs to quickly adapt to changing users’ needs and/or research goals.
