With six aviation projects underway at airports across the United States, The Weitz Company’s aviation team continues to take off and expand. From a pedestrian bridge at Orlando International Airport (MCO), to a concession project at Denver International Airport (DIA), to the new terminal at Des Moines International Airport (DSM), to a Baggage Handling System (BHS) project at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) – our aviation experts are focused on critical infrastructure in our country’s airports.

Five key hires on the aviation team, in addition to repositioning of safety and design experts, round out the team’s depth of knowledge around active airport construction.

In the last year, Weitz welcomed the following key hires:

John Carricarte, Project Executive, working at PHX

John joins us with 25 years of experience in design-build, project management, and project delivery. As a member of the American Institute of Architects, John’s training has given him the unique ability to track projects from both a technical application and on-site construction process.

Joseph Graziosi, Project Executive, working nationally

Joseph, a civil engineer and a design-build professional, joins us having worked on various mega aviation projects at PIT, DCA, JFK, and EWR to name a few. With 40+ years in the industry and experience on over 10 aviation related projects, he’s a huge value add to our airport customers, partners, and Weitz team.

Mark Zessin, Sr. Project Manager, working at PHX

Mark is a baggage handling system (BHS) guru with more than 20 years of experience working on commissioning, quality control, requirement validation, and more. He has led baggage teams at various airlines and worked at over 15 airports throughout the US.

Josh Wills, Project Executive, working at MCO

Josh is a leader of our construction team at MCO, who has 25+ years of experience working on complex, large-scale $1B+ projects in Florida and beyond. He has led various airport, transit-oriented, and public & private work from start to finish.

Pat Marino, Project Executive, working at PHX

Pat is a BHS subject matter expert and key leader of our baggage handling team. Pat’s experience boasts an impressive career dedicated to baggage systems and airport terminal BHS CBIS/CBRA implementations for nearly 40 years. Pat has worked with nearly 20 airports and multiple airlines to expand operational excellence and passenger experience.

In addition, the Weitz aviation team recently saw the promotion of Tahir Edwards to Design Manager and John Murphy to Aviation Safety Manager. These individuals expertise and enthusiasm for Weitz, our aviation projects, and our business are already making an impact, and we couldn’t be happier to have them on board.

The Weitz Company’s Aviation team is pleased to welcome Pat Marino to his new role as Project Executive, specializing as the company’s Baggage Handling System (BHS) Subject Matter Expert. Pat’s experience boasts an impressive career dedicated to baggage systems and airport terminal BHS CBIS/CBRA implementations for nearly 40 years. Pat has worked with almost 20 airports and multiple airlines around the globe to expand operational excellence and passenger experience. Recently, Pat was the Project Manager in charge of the new Centralized BHS at Kansas City International Airport’s New Terminal, designed to handle more than 2,900 bags per hour.

The baggage handling system is an essential and complex part of any airport operation, so Pat recommends keeping these three things in mind when designing or upgrading a BHS system:

  1. There are two types of BHS – Conventional Conveyor Centralized and Individual Carrier Systems (ICS). It’s vital to select the one best for your operation.

Conventional Conveyors are legacy slider beds with belt conveyors. Individual Carrier Systems focus on tubs transported on a track. The technology advantage of this system is centered on the tubs that are RFID-equipped, which provides 100% tracking accuracy throughout the entire BHS process.

The correct baggage handling system depends on the intricacies of the airport itself.

  1. Start with the endpoint in mind.

As challenges arise on any project, implementing proactive measures early is vital when handling these complex systems. Pat understands what an integral role BHS plays in the overall airport operations. Without an effective BHS operation identified early on in project planning, an airport risks the facility lacking both operational and overall passenger experience.

  1. The baggage handling system can impact the entire airport operation.

On average, 2,500 bags move through the system in an hour – handling up to 11,000 bags daily. To ensure positive consumer travel, the baggage handling system must be efficient.

Built upon collaborative relationships and customer satisfaction, the Weitz team and I are excited to pave the future for baggage handling systems. With all the different technological advancements, I cannot wait to see the growth of these systems as my career continues to serve airports across the nation. With our customer-focused approach, we understand that baggage handling systems are at the heart of the airport, dictating travel efficiency.
