Amid today’s climate of economic uncertainty, predicting where the market is headed remains a complex task. Key indicators—like the Architecture Billings Index (ABI)—suggest a slowdown is on the horizon, especially in the commercial construction sector. We’re seeing hesitation driven by tighter lending conditions, inflation concerns, and general market unease. However, not all sectors are cooling. Demand for data centers remains robust, fueled by the growth of cloud services and AI infrastructure. Likewise, infrastructure projects tied to public funding continue to provide additional construction volume across the country.

Sustainability is rapidly becoming a defining expectation in the construction industry, driven by increasing demand for environmentally responsible and energy-efficient buildings. As environmental responsibility continues to shape the future of the built environment, LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification stands as a trusted benchmark for green building practices. Through intentional planning, collaboration, and innovation, The Weitz Company helps our clients achieve their sustainability goals—delivering high-performance buildings that minimize environmental impact and maximize long-term value. Two of our recent projects—the LEED Gold-certified Kansas City International Airport New Terminal and the upcoming University of Florida Undergraduate Residential Complex with Honors College— show how sustainable construction can meet the highest standards while serving the evolving needs of communities across the country.

Kansas City International Airport New Single Terminal

The Kansas City International Airport’s New Terminal marked a significant accomplishment in the aviation industry by earning LEED Gold certification. This project is the second and the largest airport in the United States to achieve this feat and earned this certification by meeting each marker in the LEED Certification’s four-tiered point system. For a project to achieve a top-tier certification, LEED must be considered early in the planning stages.

The community’s commitment to sustainability, craftsmanship, and design innovation is now on display at the Kansas City International Airport’s New Terminal. This achievement not only marks an incredible sustainability forethought, set forth by Kansas City, but reduces the overall carbon impact an airport has on its community.

Jake Cowan, LEED Manager for the Kansas City Airport’s New Terminal project
University of Florida’s Undergraduate Residential Complex with Honors College

Another Weitz project completed recently, University of Florida’s Undergraduate Residential Complex with Honors College, is achieved LEED Gold Certification.

This certification supports UF’s ongoing campus-wide sustainability initiatives. And with people’s health and well-being at the center of the design, this project will be a living learning tool and serve as ongoing education and awareness for students, the University, and future generations.

Iris Meeker, Director of Sustainability at Walker Architects

As sustainability continues to shape the future of construction, The Weitz Company remains committed to building smarter, greener spaces that positively impact people, communities, and the planet for generations to come.

At the PSHIA 2025 Aviation Business Summit, industry leaders gathered to discuss the complexities of designing and constructing projects at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. During the “Let’s Talk Design and Construction” panel, John Carricarte, Project Executive at The Weitz Company’s Aviation division, shared key insights into working with the City of Phoenix and Sky Harbor, focusing on collaboration, advanced planning, sustainability integration, and effectively managing airport expectations.

Building for an Operational Airport

During his remarks, John emphasized the unique challenges of working in an active airport environment, where construction teams must balance infrastructure improvements with maintaining smooth operations for travelers. He outlined the following items as keys to success when operating in active spaces:

  • Understanding Airport Values – Sky Harbor International Airport prioritizes passenger experience, and construction teams must align with those values to minimize disruptions and enhance traveler satisfaction.
  • Maintaining the Traveler’s Experience – From clear wayfinding to noise reduction strategies, every decision made on-site contributes to the overall airport experience.
  • Aligning with Airport Goals – Working hand-in-hand with Sky Harbor to identify key objectives—whether sustainability, efficiency, or brand representation—ensures that projects contribute to the airport’s long-term success.
  • Executing Multiple Plans – Airports are dynamic environments where flexibility is essential. By planning ahead and preparing for processes such as timing and costs associated with badging, insurance requirements, site logistics and how to communicate clearly and often, teams can seamlessly carry out the project needs
  • Supporting the Sky Harbor Brand – Beyond delivering quality projects, John highlighted the importance of representing Sky Harbor’s brand values throughout the construction process. “Our team, stakeholders, and trade partners all represent the airport and its values each day when we are on-site. We are ambassadors for the airport,” he shared.
Aviation Phenomenal Champion of the Year- The Weitz Company

In addition to the panel, the 2025 Aviation Business Summit also held a brief awards ceremony during the lunch program. During the program, The Weitz Company received the 2025 Aviation Phenomenal Champion of the Year award.

“They’ve been a stellar business partner through this entire process [PSHIA Terminal 4 baggage handling systems upgrades project], standing ready to provide aviation solutions for the project that meets not only our needs, but the improvements that will actually support the needs of our very important customers, our airlines.”

Chad Makovsky, City of Phoenix Director of Aviation Services

This recognition underscores Weitz’s commitment to delivering aviation solutions that align with Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport’s vision for operational excellence and enhanced passenger experiences.

DAscanio’s proven leadership and expertise in large-scale projects will strengthen Weitz’s presence in Arizona and beyond.

(Phoenix, Arizona) – The Weitz Company is excited to announce Frank DAscanio’s promotion to Vice President and General Manager of the company’s Arizona Office in Phoenix. He will take on this role in addition to his role of Vice President and General Manager of the company’s Commercial unit, which operates on projects nationally.

Weitz announces this leadership change as the company continues to deliver large-scale and complex construction projects to the local cities and communities that its offices have built in for decades. Frank’s leadership shines through in his operational expertise and ability to develop strong teams, ensuring the Arizona office will continue to leverage the company’s expertise in Aviation, Mission Critical, Commercial, and Industrial sectors.

“Since joining Weitz, I’ve had the privilege of working on some of the most complex and rewarding projects in our company. I am excited to take on this expanded leadership role and continue working with our teams to drive Weitz’s growth in the Arizona market and beyond. Weitz has a great, long-standing reputation and I look forward to building on that legacy and ensuring we continue delivering excellence to our clients and communities.”

Frank DAscanio, Vice President & General Manager | The Weitz Company

Frank joined Weitz in 2005, and, throughout his tenure, has held successive operations roles and led large scale projects including Park West at Texas A&M University, the largest student housing complex in the country at the time. He has been remarkably successful in driving operational discipline and cultivating highly engaged teams and we look forward to seeing his continued success in this new role.

“Our Commercial and Arizona teams have a rich history of bringing the company’s operational excellence to projects like Texas A&M University, PHX Sky Train, and more. With Frank at the helm of both our Commercial and Arizona teams, he’ll bring his 20-year company tenure and vast large scale project expertise to help Weitz flourish throughout the region and beyond.”

Kevin McClain, CEO & President | The Weitz Company

Weitz established the Arizona office in 1978, and since then has become an integral builder in the community constructing projects such as 44 Monroe, multiple hyperscale data centers, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport T4 Baggage Handling System, and more. Prior to Frank’s recent promotion, Mina Wassef served as the General Manager for the Phoenix office. Mina will be transitioning into a larger role within the company’s business development leadership team.

One of the core values of Weitz includes nurturing personal growth. The company could not be prouder to see individuals like Frank and Mina grow their careers at Weitz and become leaders with extensive knowledge and expertise that will help our company continue to build a better way.

According to the Associated Builders and Contractors Association (ABC), the construction industry is facing a critical labor shortage due to the estimated 1.5 million undocumented immigrants working in the sector. The industry still needs to attract 439,000 new workers in 2025 and 499,000 new workers in 2026 to meet industry demands. Failing to do so will exacerbate labor cost increases across the industry, driving up construction expenses and limiting the amount of work that remains financially viable. Contractors will struggle to fill open positions, especially in regions with major manufacturing and data center projects underway.

In 2025, construction spending is projected to grow at its slowest rate in years, with interest rate-sensitive sectors like homebuilding facing particular challenges. The ongoing high interest rates throughout 2025 will continue to strain the financial landscape for the industry.
